ST1004: Intro to Surgical Technology

This four-credit-hour online theory course introduces the surgical technology profession, including its history, scope of practice, professional responsibilities, credentialing, and professional organizations. Students examine legal and ethical concepts, teamwork and communication, patient-centered care, and the needs of diverse surgical patient populations. Additional topics include healthcare facility organization, the surgical environment, safety standards, technological science concepts, and principles of microbiology as they relate to surgical practice and infection prevention. Course content aligns with the AST Core Curriculum for Surgical Technology, 7th Edition.
