For each unit of credit, a minimum of three hours per week with one of the hours for class and two hours for studying/preparation outside of class is expected.
The mission of the Surgical Technology program is to provide competent, entry-level surgical technologists.
Outcome #1: Read with comprehension, be critical of what they read, and apply knowledge gained from their reading to broader issues of the day.
Outcome #2: Communicate ideas clearly and proficiently in writing, appropriately adjusting content and arrangement for varying audiences, purposes, and situations.
Outcome #5: Demonstrate the ability to think critically by gathering facts, generating insights, analyzing data, and evaluating information.
- Demonstrate an understanding of skills needed to achieve and maintain a sterile environment incorporating terms related to asepsis and sources of contamination.
- Identify key steps for transporting, transferring and positioning patients safely.
- Identify the steps and rationales for the preoperative and intraoperative case planning and procedures that include the surgical skin preparation, urinary catheterization and draping of the surgical patient.
- Identify environmental hazards and energy sources that are found in the surgical environment.
- Demonstrate an understanding of hemostasis, stages of healing, surgical wound classification and closure techniques.
- Demonstrate an understanding of diagnostic and assessment procedures for the surgical patient.
