Course Description

This clinical course is designed to allow the student to begin to apply skills learned in the first semester to real life procedures. The student will learn to select instrumentation and other supplies for specific procedures, apply learning in anatomy and pathophysiology, apply techniques learned from the Fall Surgical Technology course of preparing for surgeries, passing instruments to the surgeon in the clinical setting. The student will apply aseptic technique and adhere to the strict standards of the core curriculum.

For each unit of credit, a minimum of three hours per week with one of the hours for class and two hours for studying/preparation outside of class is expected.

The mission of the Surgical Technology program is to provide competent, entry-level surgical technologists.

Course Outline

Students will be required to attend clinical two days a week, 8 hours a day for 15 weeks.

Students will first and second scrub on General, ENT, Orthopedic, OB-Gyn, Genitourinary, Ophthalmic, Plastic, and Peripheral Vascular Surgery.

Students will transition from the second scrub role to the first scrub role during the course while increasing knowledge of surgical procedures.

Cases will be logged using online database (DataArc) to track student progress throughout semester.

Instructional Methods

Students will learn, demonstrate and refine surgical technology skills in the on-site

clinical facilities through clinical rotations.

Instructional Resources and Materials

Internet, web-based course management platform, audiovisual media, textbooks,

online subscriptions, and clinical site staff.

Methods of Assessment

SCCC Outcome 5 will be assessed and measured by morning reports, operation reports, 5 and 10 week evaluations, staff evaluations and daily clinical performance grades.

SCCC Outcome 9 will be assessed and measured by 5 and 10 week evaluations, staff evaluations and daily clinical performance grades.
