Course Description

This course is a study of the instruments and instrument systems used in the energy industries including terminology, symbols, control loops, P&ID drawings, and basic instrument troubleshooting.

For each unit of credit, a minimum of three hours per week with one of the hours for class and two hours for studying/preparation outside of class is expected.

Course Outcomes
  1. Using knowledge of symbols, process diagrams and instrumentation, sketch a simple process diagram, including control loops.
  2. Describe the various process variables (flow, level, pressure, temperature, analytical, etc.) found in a plant and explain how instruments are used to sense, measure and transmit this information to the control system.
  3. Identify the types of control loops (simple and complex) and explain their operation.
  4. Identify the components of a closed control loop (primary element, transmitter, controller, transducer, final element) and explain their interrelationships.
  5. Identify typical instrument malfunctions found in control loops and explain how they may affect a process (cause and effect).

Instructional Methods
  1. Lecture Short: lectures will be used to emphasize different concepts of the daily lessons.
  2. Assignments: Students will work selected problems in order to involve the student and assure his or her understanding of the skills required for future work.
  3. Class Discussions: Questions may be initiated by either the teacher or students at any time during class discussions.
  4. Examinations: Tests are frequently used to help summarize concepts and emphasize important skills.
  5. Individual Help: Each student is encouraged to come for the instructor'�s help, providing he or she has been attending class regularly, as he or she has difficulty. Office hours are posted.
