Course Description

This required theory seminar course provides an opportunity for students to integrate their nursing educational experiences, applying concepts, principles, and critical thinking to solve problems and make decisions in simulated client care situations which include communication, pharmacology, client teaching, prioritization, and delegation. This course is designed to facilitate successful entry into nursing practice and is required.

For each unit of credit, a minimum of three hours per week with one of the hours for class and two hours for studying/preparation outside of class is expected.

The Nursing Program at Seward County Community College prepares competent practical and associate degree nurses to assist in meeting the health care needs of clients by delivering quality wholistic care.

Course Outcomes
  1. Apply major nursing concepts and guiding principles that underlie the delivery of safe and effective client care.
  2. Demonstrate critical thinking when applying problem-solving and decision- making skills to simulated client care situations.
  3. Describe the NCLEX-RN test plan and areas of competency defined by the National Council of State Boards of Nursing as being within the scope of practice for beginning graduate nurses.
  4. Present a realistic personal study plan that reflects individual readiness to facilitate NCLEX-RN testing success. Apply major nursing concepts and guiding principles for delivery of safe and effective care.
  5. Describe the concept of computer adaptive testing (CAT) in assessing clinical judgement in nursing care.
  6. Incorporate culture, ethnic and social diversity concepts in making clinical judgements for nursing care of clients of all ages.
  7. Demonstrate critical thinking by successfully answering NCLEX-RN style questions at the application/analysis and evaluation/synthesis level regarding the nursing process, communication, delegation, prioritization, interdisciplinary collaboration, and all aspects of the RN test plan.
  8. Identify areas of strength regarding your professional development and discuss how to maximize those strengths.
  9. Identify areas for improvement regarding your professional development and discuss specific strategies to improve in these areas.
  10. Complete assessment exams in selected specialty content areas and develop in improvement plan as indicated.

Methods of Assessment

SCCC Outcome 1, 8 will be assessed and measured by class participation and pre and post tests may be incorporated.

SCCC Outcome 2, 4, 5, 6 will be assessed and measured by writing assignments, class participation, and by the student score on the Kaplan Readiness exam, Kaplan Secure Final exam, and Kaplan Predictive 2 exam.
