One (1) credit hour. A one (1) credit hour theory/lecture. The content of this theory course is to orient the practical nurse (LPN, LVN) who is returning to school for an associate degree in nursing to the curriculum. Content will be individualized based on student experiences and needs. Role changes from LPN to RN are discussed in relation to SCCC's nursing philosophy and conceptual framework. Emphasis will be placed on use of critical thinking, communication, medication calculations, and the nursing process as integral tools of nursing practice. The student will have an opportunity to socialize into the student role before integrating into a classroom of Level II nursing students. For each unit of credit, a minimum of three hours per week with one of the hours for class and two hours for studying/preparation outside of class is expected.

The Nursing Program at Seward County Community College prepares competent practical and associate degree nurses to assist in meeting the health care needs of clients by delivering quality wholistic care.

Upon completion of this course the student will be able to:

  1. Identify measures to ensure success in the transition from LPN to ADN in the educational setting.
  2. Locate selected areas and resources at SCCC and SWMC to facilitate collaboration with members of the interdisciplinary care team.
  3. Identify strengths and weaknesses in utilizing information applied to documentation and pharmacology.
  4. Utilize critical thinking to develop a plan of care with emphasis on nursing diagnoses, medications, pathophysiology, laboratory, diagnostic studies, and client teaching.
  5. Utilize APA format to write an article review incorporating evidence based practice.
  6. Identify priorities of patient care and time management to make safe and effective clinical judgments.

Methods of Assessment

Institutional outcomes will be assessed by the following methods: daily work, care plans, computer assignments, exam review, ATI testing, research articles. Refer to NR class policies for further information regarding the percentage each assessment method carries towards the final grade.

SCCC Outcome 1 will be assessed and measured by class participation, review of care plans, and written assignments indication comprehension of material read.

SCCC Outcome 2 will be assessed and measured by nursing care plans, article reviews, and patient care documentation in Meditech.

SCCC Outcomes 4 will be assessed and measured by written examination and in the clinical areas particularly with medication administration.

SCCC Outcome 5 will be assessed and measured by exams, clinical preparation, nursing care plans and written paper.

SCCC Outcome 6 will be assessed and measured by clinical competencies, hospitalized in computer training, testing, and in the skills and/or simulation lab.

SCCC Outcome 7 will be assessed and measured by class participation, clinical care and nursing care plans.

SCCC Outcome 9 will be assessed and measured by class participation, clinical experiences with the diverse population, working with the staff and peers and demonstration of personal responsibility and accountability.
