Art in the Elementary School is a fundamental course designed to familiarize students with appropriate art media and techniques used in teaching children. The focus the course is that art is an integral part of the elementary curriculum, and that the study of art is composed of four areas: art production, aesthetics, art criticism, and art history.

For each unit of credit, a minimum of three hours per week with one of the hours for class and two hours for studying/preparation outside of class is expected.

The mission of the Humanities and Social Sciences is to foster an appreciation of the role that the humanities and social sciences has played in the evolution of civilized society and to explore the ways that an understanding of theory and practice in philosophy, the social and behavioral sciences, the fine arts, and written and oral expression will enable students to participate thoughtfully in a global society.

On completion of this course the student will be able to develop and teach an appropriate art lesson that incorporates art history, art production, aesthetics and criticism.

  1. The purpose of the Art in the Elementary School course is to provide the student with an understanding of the philosophy and processes of art education in the elementary school.

The kindergarten through sixth grade teacher can design, implement, and evaluate arts experiences that are developmentally appropriate, meaningful and challenging for all students, that lead to positive learning outcomes, and that develop positive dispositions toward artistic explorations and expression.

  1. Students will demonstrate the ability to research an artist and then write an artist biography appropriate for use in the elementary classroom.
  2. Students will develop and teach a lesson to their classmates.
