Course Description

This course is specifically designed to identify Criminal Justice students, provide the coordinator/instructor an opportunity to give vocational counseling and individual personal assistance. This course will give the student specialized instruction in areas which are covered by the Lambda Alpha Epsilon Society of the American Criminal Justice Association. These areas are Criminal Law, Professional Physical Agility, Criminal Investigations, Law Enforcement Principles, Corrections and Police Firearms.

For each unit of credit, a minimum of three hours per week with one of the hours for class and two hours for studying/preparation outside of class is expected.

Program and/or Department Mission Statement

The mission of the Humanities and Social Sciences is to foster an appreciation of the role that the humanities and social sciences has played in the evolution of civilized society and to explore the ways that an understanding of theory and practice in philosophy, the social and behavioral sciences, the fine arts, and written and oral expression will enable students to participate thoughtfully in a global society.

Course Outcomes

At the completion of this course students should be more comfortable with the selection process for law enforcement and other criminal justice positions and better prepared as members of the Sigma Chi Chi branch of the Lambda Alpha Epsilon Criminal Justice Association. The student will demonstrate their understanding of the subject by demonstrating at least 70% competency of the topics to be covered, including:

  1. Discussing the by-laws of Seward County Community College Sigma Chi Chi.
  2. Discussing current events in the criminal justice system.
  3. Planning and participating in fund raisers.
  4. Completing practical exercises in preparation for competition and other events.
  5. Participating in community service projects.
  6. Demonstrating job seeking skills.

Methods of Assessment

Methods of assessing SCCC course outcomes include class attendance and participation in events as per the by-laws of Sigma Chi Chi.

  1. Will be assessed by crime scene report and written responses to guest speakers.
  2. Will be assessed by crime scene report and class discussions.
  3. Will be assessed by discussion of everyday ethical dilemmas pertaining to various areas of the criminal justice system.
  4. Will be assessed by classroom discussion regarding duties of various professionals in the criminal justice field and participation in community service projects and fund raisers.
  5. Will be assessed by observing student's classroom behavior and interaction with classmates and the instructor during classroom discussion and lecture.
