Course Description
This is a firearms course for criminal justice majors. Emphasis will be placed on firearms safety and marksmanship in preparation for firearms competition or other marksmanship events.

For each unit of credit, a minimum of three hours per week with one of the hours for class and two hours for studying/preparation outside of class is expected.

Course Outcomes

At the completion of this course students should be able to apply basic principles of handgun use, including firearm safety and marksmanship fundamentals. The student will demonstrate their understanding if the subject by demonstrating at least 75% competency of the topics to be covered, including:

  1. Identify the parts of the weapon and use the correct terminology.
  2. Examine the functioning of the semi-auto pistol.
  3. Demonstrate proper way to field strip and clean the weapon.
  4. Demonstrate proper loading and unloading of the weapon.
  5. Demonstrate proper placement of belt, holster and magazine pouch.
  6. Demonstrate proper drawing and holstering.
  7. Demonstrate proper grip and stance.
  8. Demonstrate proper sight alignment and trigger control.
  9. Demonstrate safe gun handling and knowledge of range commands.
  10. Demonstrate shooting proficiency.
  11. Demonstrate proficiency in the clearance of stoppages and malfunction inherent to the semi-auto.
